Drones Can See Inside of Your Home: Fact Or Myth?

Does the thought of a drone seeing inside your home give you shivers? I know it scares me! I did some research on this disturbing possibility and here’s what I discovered.

The simple answer to this is no, drones cannot see inside your home unless they have super-advanced technology. The drone would need to be right outside your window to do this, and the glare combined with the rotating props would seriously distort the image.

With that being said, there are still drones out there with super-advanced technology that can, in fact, have the potential to do this! Keep reading to find out more.

The Reality of Drones Seeing Inside Your Home

Drones are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs) that have cameras attached to them in order to take photos and video footage of the area surrounding it or any specific object.

Because of the fact that drones are able to take pictures and videos remotely from an aerial view, this has made many people worry how safe they are in their homes now that there are machines other people can use to spy on them.

Well, the only way a drone can see into a person’s house is if they fly close to the windows and look through, but even that comes with some complications—there can be a gleam of light from the sun that would obstruct the view of the camera, so it is not easy for a drone to actually look into a house. Furthermore, drones are notoriously noisy machines, so it is unlikely that one could hover near your bedroom window without you hearing it!

Drones have been used for many things in the past—the military mainly used drones for reconnaissance missions into enemy territory in order to survey the land before sending in troops.

Today, drones are used for many reasons, but paparazzi have also used drones to try to take pictures of celebrities sunbathing so that they can sell them to tabloids for money!

Can Drones See Through Walls?

Drone technology can be used for both good and bad purposes, like any other technology that exists in the world and that has ever existed before, it all depends on who is actually using the technology.

The existence of laws won’t stop people who intend to break the law from doing so. Some of the first people who used drones to try and spy on other people were paparazzi.

In fact, a father in Kentucky was even forced to shoot down a drone with his shotgun when he spotted it hovering over his property spying on his sunbathing daughter.

So far, drones have only been used to spy on people who are in their gardens, but recently robbers have been using drones to assist them with their planned robberies.

In the United Kingdom, the first cases have already been reported and the danger begins to lurk in Spain as well. Drones which can be bought for anything between $50 to tens of thousands of dollars are being used to take surveillance photographs from above houses, which is now posing a new threat to homeowners everywhere.

Regardless of whether anything is taken from the home, burglars often get away from the crime without anything happening to them, especially if the home lacks any form of a security system.

Surprisingly, in Dublin, some Gangs used drones to survey various garages before stealing cars and various types of equipment worth thousands of euros.

If an Infrared or Thermal camera is attached to a drone then the pilot would be able to see the thermal heat signatures of the objects inside the building.

This is a method used by law enforcement and the military to survey possible threats in a building before sending in any officers or troops into a potentially dangerous environment.

The same thing is being done by robbers by scouting out a house and determining if anyone is home first before making a move. The only difference is that petty thieves cannot get their hands on the kind of camera equipment they would need to be able to see thermal imaging through walls.

As drone technology continues to improve, this means this technology will be more easily accessible. But, you can also expect that regulations will be put in place to ensure that these innovations remain in the hands of vetted pilots who will be expected to use them responsibly.

Hopefully, companies out there will definitely develop technology that is able to combat or stop this technology from being used to spy on regular people and put people in danger.

Check out this super interesting clip about the capabilities of drones in the modern world:

Can Drones See Through Curtains?

The only way drones would possibly be able to see through a curtain is if the curtains were not drawn and the drone was floating no more than a few feet from your curtains. So, exactly the same as a person standing outside your window!

Another way for a drone to be able to see through a curtain is if it had a thermal or infrared camera. This wouldn’t be the same as normal images but it would be able to capture the thermal signatures of the things inside the home. This can be used by criminals to count how many people live in the home and even worse, to scout out if anyone is home before they make plans to rob it.

But thermal and infrared cameras are very expensive and not easily attainable. So it is unlikely that every Tom, Dick and Harry in the neighbourhood would have one and spy on you. So at the moment, you do not really have to worry about drones seeing through your curtains as much as you would worry about a peeping Tom.

Another thing is once you close the curtains and your windows, the calibre of camera that most drones are equipped with would not be powerful enough to get any image worth worrying about.

The drones that do have a higher quality of camera would be a lot bigger and have larger motors and propellers to be able to carry these cameras which means the drones would also be a lot louder than your average drone.

So, imagine sitting on your couch and suddenly hearing a loud buzzing noise above your house. Just like when you hear a helicopter in your neighborhood it would raise suspicion and everyone would be able to hear it.

So basically if a drone is hovering quite a distance from your house it wouldn’t take an image or video good enough for you to need to worry about it. Additionally, if the drone does come hovering a few feet from your open window, you can be sure it is up to no good and do something about it, such as calling the authorities.

Will Drones See Through Curtains in The Future?

Drones are very much a reflection of the current state of technology. They evolved from only being used in the military and became mainstream as a result of the right technology becoming available.

As the world’s technology advances, you can expect that the capabilities of drones will advance with it. Another thing that will evolve with the tech and drones is the rules and regulations that the government has put in place.

Maybe one day we will have drones that will be capable of seeing through curtains or hearing conversations from a mile away. But when that happens, I am sure there will also be technology developed that will be able to counter these capabilities.
