We’ve all been there. We get so hyped up about a new toy or video game, then after a few days you get bored of it and you move on to the next best thing. It’s happened so many times that you’re probably wondering if the same thing will happen if you buy a drone. So will a drone get boring?
I’ve had my drone for years and I’ll never get bored of it, here are 9 very good reasons why.
For me, the possibilities with a drone are literally endless. As long as you give your drone a purpose, you’ll never get bored with it. Here are some of the best ways you can give your drone that purpose.
Most hobby drones these days such as the DJI Mavic Pro are equipped with fantastic cameras, in fact, it’s very common that for drones to come with 12MP cameras which are as good as an iPhone 11 pro. And since you can take pictures from high up in the air with a drone, it gives you an opportunity to take some breathtaking videos and photos of your surroundings.
My recommendation? Take advantage of this. Don’t just use the camera as a first-person view. Take up photography as a hobby, learn how to use the camera properly, and explore new ways to take pictures of animals, buildings, and the countryside. Who knows, if you get good enough, you could even turn this into a full-time job.
If you watch Josh Gates Expidition Unknown then you’ll NEVER get bored with a drone. The program is features on Discovery Channel and it’s about finding hidden treaures around the world.
A lot of the time he searches for treasure right here in the U.S and they often use drones to help them with their hunt.
That being said, here’s some ideas I got from his show that can be done right here in the U.S.
This is a treasure hunting book that was written by Byron Preiss in 1982. The book leaves hidden clues that lead two 12 boxes that are placed around the world that hold a key that gives you access to an extremely valuable gem. And it also gives you access to an insiders club. Sounds exciting right? well, it is! And you can use your drone to help you find this treasure.
Sharktooth Hill in Sierra Nevada foothills outside of Bakersfield on the west coast is an area loaded with Megladon teeth. And the best part? it’s open for anyone to go and find them. You could use your drone to make these searches easier…just saying.
Back in 1715 a Spanish fleet that was carrying millions of dollars of gold coins shipwrecked between Sebastian and northern Martin County in Florida. There was so much lost treasure, that random beachgoers still come across these golden coins while casually enjoying a day at the beach. Idea? Use your drone to try to find some of this treasure.
Remember when you were a kid and you’d try to explore every nook and cranny of every mountainside. With your drone you can, with very little energy.
The whole point of this is to be as curious as possible. A drone gives you so much freedom to explore at the tip of your fingertips, so take advantage of that. Boredom comes when you get boring!
If you have a bit of a competitive spirit then drone racing will more than likely float your boat. It’s extrmeely intense, action packed and takes a ton of focus. If you lose focus even for a split second, it could cost you thousands of dollars. This combination makes it extremely rewarding and fun. You get such an adrenalin rush from this, it’s the closest feeling you’ll ever get from flying a jet.
If you want to give this a bash, then look for drone racing groups in your area on Facebook, online drone forums or google. They’re literally all over the place so you shouldn’t have a problem finding any.
Here are some online drone forums if you’re having problems finding drone racing groups in your area:
And here’s some more information on drone racing if you’re interested.
Even if you don’t do any extreme sports yourself, you could still use your drone to get up close and personal with those that do. Imagine the footage that you’ll get while following a surfer on a 6-foot wave. And the best part? they’ll love you for getting that perfect shot.
When I used to surf a few years back we used to love it when bystanders would record us from the beach. Afterward, they would always be happy with sharing the footage with us. If someone had only offered to record us with a drone, we would have jumped for the opportunity.
So if you own a drone, make yourself available, not everyone can afford them and you’ll get some amazing drone footage at the same time.
Most drones these days even come with active track features which will automatically follow the person that you tag. This makes it so much easier to track a person.
Generally, people get bored of flying a drone because they don’t have a purpose for it. If you use a drone to enhance a hobby that you’re already interested in, then you’ll never lose love for your drone.
I know I know, some people find bird watching extremely boring, however, if you’re into this sort of thing, people are using their drones to not only spot but also fly with some of the rarest birds on the face of the earth.
Now we’re talking. If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie then why don’t you plan a holiday to tornado alley and try to get some footage of a tornado with your drone? It’s a lot safer than trying to drive into a storm with a camera. Personally, this is on my bucket list, so if you beat me to it give me some tips in the comments section below.
If tornado chasing is a bit too extreme, you could even get some drone footage of a storm. They’re monstrous and beautiful, it’s not every day you get a view of them from up in the air. If you’re going to do this make sure you read this article on how you can waterproof your drone.
Sounds like cheating doesn’t it? Well in the near future this might be the new norm. Using drones for fishing has become so popular that drones are being designed and sold specifically for fishing. So if you’re into fishing then consider using your drone to help you out.
Even if you don’t want to use a drone to actually hook the fish, you could still use it to scout where the fish are hiding, and to deliver the fishing hook from your rod so you can get your hook out a lot further than what you usually do. This could save your hours of wasted time.
If you’re still not convinced that a drone won’t get boring, then join a drone club. You’ll not only meet a ton of strange but awesome people, you’ll also find out exactly how they keep themselves busy with their drones.
Look for drone clubs in your area on Facebook or Google, they should be easy to find,
If you’re into gaming, then 3d modeling and land surveying could be something that you would want to get into. Drone technology is so fantastic these days that you can make a 3d model of your home and garden the one day, then play counterstrike in that 3d model the next day. Crazy thought huh? If I had this when I was a kid I would have tried to 3d model every building I could find.
You could even use your drone for some good. Here’s an idea, go out on the hunt for lost dog or cat posters, then use your drone to try and find them. Just ask the owners if they’ve been found before you do though, no point going out looking for a lost pet if it’s already been found.
If you’re into that handyman stuff, use your drone to inspect your home to make sure it’s not falling apart. You’ll be surprised at what a state your roof is in. Drones are also great at ramping up the security of your property. If you live in an area that gets a lot of crime, then you can even do drone patrols for your neighborhood. Your neighbors will appreciate you for it!
