Know The Difference Between Hull coverage and liability coverage.

Before going over these insurance quotes, you’ll want to know what you’re actually looking at. You’ll notice that below I mention two different insurance coverage, hull coverage and liability coverage. Here’s the difference.

Hull coverage insurance will protect your actual drone against loss, theft, and damage. It’s generally the cheapest kind of insurance and you shouldn’t be paying more than $10 per month depending on the package. If you do need hull damage insurance make sure it covers your drone while it’s in flight, some insurance companies will charge extra for that.

Liability insurance doesn’t cover the actual drone, however, it’s designed for larger claims that evolve around accident caused by your drone. For example, if you cause an injury to a person, or you cause damage to property by flying your drone into some powerlines, for example, liability insurance is what will save your day. If you’re a hobby drone pilot, liability insurance isn’t that important, however as a commercial drone pilot you’ll definitely want to consider this.

However keep in mind, your home insurance or business insurance might already cover accidents that happen with drones. So make sure you give them a call before you add liability insurance to your drone insurance plan below.

As a rule of thumb, $1 million dollars of liability insurance is more than enough, and this would be the standard offer from most drone companies. However, if you are a hobby drone pilot and they do offer smaller packages, it might be worth taking it.

Now that you know what to look out for, here are 5 of the best-looking insurance quotes that I found online in 2020.

Quote 01. Drone Insurance

One of the most popular drone insurance companies in the United States, Drone Insurance is also extremely easy to use and they also offer both hull and liability insurance to commercial and recreational drone pilots at a very reasonable price of only $10 per month.

*Quote of $10 per month was done for the DJI Mavic Air 2 2020 model as a recreational drone pilot. This quote will cover $800 hull insurance and $1000 000 liability.

The packages they offer are very similar to Sky Watch in which they offer liability and hull insurance as a single package, which does make it easier to apply.

Here’s what they’ll cover you for:

  • $1 million in liability costs.
  • Any damage that is done to your drone when it’s on the ground or in flight. *Make sure you add flight coverage as I did in my quote. It’s only an extra $3 per month.
  • You’ll also be covered for theft.

Here are some more details on their policies.

Here’s where you can apply.

Quote 02. SkyWatch Drone Insurance

Skywatch is probably the most popular and most talked-about drone insurance in the United States. They have been around for a long time, and they’re definitely the bigger player. However, with a quote of $71 per month, they are definitely not the cheapest.

First thoughts when using their online platform to apply for insurance is, “man this is easy.” All the information is communicated well, which makes it really easy to apply.

*Quote of $71 per month was done for the DJI Mavic Air 2 2020 model as a recreational drone pilot. This quote will cover $800 hull insurance and $1000 000 liability.

The company offers liability and hull coverage to both commercial and hobby drone pilots. Just keep in mind that commercial drone pilots will pay more because they’re a higher risk to the insurance company.

Instead of offering hull and liability insurance separately, they combine it in a single package with a minimum set liability insurance of $1 million, which is pretty much what most companies will offer.

For hull insurance, you can also add any drone equipment that you would like to cover.

They will cover you for:

  • $1 million in liability
  • Loss or physical damage of the drone
  • Theft disappearance and even fly aways

Here are the full details of their policies.

Quote 03. RVNA Drone Insurance

Extremely easy and quick to get a quote, literally took me a minute and they asked for minimal details. However, they don’t really specify if the quote covers your drone for a full year, or if that’s the monthly fee. My hunch is that the quote they give is for a full year, however, make sure you double-check this. For a “yearly” fee of $392 for liability and hull insurance, that works out to be around $32.60 per month.

They allow you to get hull insurance separately. That being said I’ll get two quotes, one with just hull insurance, and the other with liability and hull coverage.

Here’s a quote just for hull coverage:

  • They allow you to add “payloads” and gimbals to the coverage package.
  • The minimum deductible they offer is $250.

Here’s a quote for hull coverage and liability insurance.

Here’s where you can apply.

Quote 04. Verifly by Thimble Drone Insurance

This insurance company offers on-demand drone insurance for hobby and recreational drone pilots at $10 per hour.

It works through an app the sets a permiter around you, then once payment has been made, it will insure you for your selected time period. At $10 it is pretty expensive, however, if you don’t fly often then this might work out cheaper in the long run.

Another down side is they don’t offer hull insurance, they solely cover drone pilots for liability. So if your drone expensive you would need to get hull insurance from another company.

You should be able to find the app on your app store, however, if you struggle to find it you’ll find the app links on their drone insurance page here.

Quote 05. DJI Care Refresh

If you have a DJI then getting hull insurance just got a lot easier. The care refresh packages can be bought for a set fee and will last you for one year.

In that time, you’re allowed two replacements or repairs, which is extremely reasonable for just $79, which works out to be just $6.58 per month.

The package covers all sorts of hull damage done to the drone for example:

  • If your drone get’s damaged because of pilot error in the air.
  • Any water damage.
  • On the ground hull damage, for example, if you drop your drone.

While the care refresh is a big stepup from the warranty, keep in mind that insurance policies have their limits. The care refresh’s limits are as follows:

  • You’re not allowed to fly in extreme weather confitions or dangerous environments. Like in a volcano for example.
  • They don’t cover theft or loss, which is a big down side if you ask me, Most hull insurance companies will cover with theft and loss.
  • They won’t repair any cosmetic damage done to the drone.
  • Be careful not to break the insurance policy by making major 3rd party modifications to your drone.

Another downside is if you need a replacement you’ll have to pay a replacement fee of $69 for the first replacement, and $99 for the second replacement. Again, this is for the DJI Mavic air 2 so this might change for you drones model.
