If you are like me, you have struggled to find a good method to drop a fishing line from your drone when drone fishing. I did some research and found a few methods of dropping a fishing line that might just work for you.
To drop a fishing line from a drone, you can either buy an attachment that releases the fishing line and the bait or make an attachment yourself using everyday household items. Here are the top 4 best ways:
- Gannet Bait Release
- Coat Hanger Bait Release
- SkyClip Bait Release
- Downrigger Release Clip
Keep reading to learn exactly how each of these bait release systems work!
Gannet Bait Release
Dronefishing.com is the main site anglers visit for all their drone fishing needs and is the home to all the Gannet products.
Gannet has made drone fishing easier for all potential drone fishermen out there. They make drone bait release systems that attach to the drone seamlessly and make releasing your line a lot easier!
They also make a line of waterproof drones that are built with rigs to release bait from the drone.
Since DJI is the leading consumer drone manufacturer in the world, Gannets bait releases are mostly catering for DJI, but they also make bait release mechanisms for many other drones as well.
Their most popular drone release systems are the release systems they make to attach to the DJI Phantom series of drones and the DJI Mavic series of drones.
Gannet made sure to pay special attention to these drones. For example, the drones have sensors along the bottom which allows for obstacle avoidance and self-landing. They are some of the most reliable and consistent drone fishing bait releases on the market at the moment.
What is great about Gannet is that they made their drone bait release system that attaches to the drone in a way that doesn’t interfere with any of these sensors, yet are still effective.
Releasing the fishing line from Gannet:
The Gannet bait release system is really easy to use no matter what drone you are using. They are built specifically to be attached to a drone without disturbing the propellers or any of the sensors or cameras that might be on the drone.
Because they are attached without interfering with any drone parts, this makes the release really easy as well.
Step 1: Once the line has been clipped into the Gannet bait release you can fly the drone out.
Step 2: When you have reached the point where you want to drop the line, all you have to do is stop the reel. The tension from the line suddenly stopping will cause the line to drop from the bait release system.
Step 3: The drone will carry on moving when the line drops.
Step 4: Stop the drone and either return home or hover over the bait to watch what happens.
Price: The price range varies for all types of drones but for new drone anglers I recommend the Gannet Sport drone fishing bait release that costs around $50.
Some of the other drones they offer bait release systems for are the:
- Mavic series
- Inspire series
They also have a generic drone bait release system that is able to be attached to most drones.
SkyClip Bait Release
Using the SkyClip Mechanical release device to haul your fishing line is one of the simplest methods you can use in order to drop your fishing line when drone fishing.
SkyClip mechanical release excels over other tension systems by being designed to be repeatable every time it releases with minimal variance.
The tension is set to the limit of the specific drone models carrying capacity at the factory and will release instantly if the tension exceeds the setting of the mechanism. This makes the release system also very safe to use in any situation.
SkyClip attachments availabe for these drone models:
- SJRC S70W
- Phantom Series
- Mavic series
- Hubsan X4Pro
Here are the steps to release your fishing line using the SkyClip:
Step 1: Insert or clip the line in the slot of the bait release until it locks in place.
Step 2: Take-off the drone gently and reach a defined safety height of over 20 meters above sea level.
Step 3: Fly the drone out over the water at maximum speed.
- As a safety precaution make sure that your line does not touch the water during the flight.
- Also, make sure that the line is taught during the flight.
Step 4: Once you reach the point that you want to drop the bait, close the lever of the reel mechanism so that the line stops. At this point, the line should release.
Downrigger Release Clip
This method is very simple and hardly needs anything other than stuff you probably will have in your fishing gear already. Bonus!
The Downrigger Release Clip method of dropping a line has been tried and tested on a DJI Phantom 3/4 drone, which is a drone I recommend using to drone fish if you do decide to use this method.
If you haven’t made the release clip yet and attached it to your drone, here is a video detailing how to make one in a few easy steps:
How to release fishing line from drone:
Step 1: When ready to fish just clip the downrigger release clip to the fishing line that connects the lure and the fishing rod.
Step 2: Open up the bail on the fishing rod.
Step 3: Fly the drone out as far as you need to go with the bail open to allow the line to flow.
Step 4: When you reach the area you want to drop your line, just flip the bail over on the line.
Step 5: Once that is done, fly the drone further away and the clip will release the line when it feels more tension.
Coat Hanger Bait Release
This may seem like a funny concept, but if you are looking for a way to drone fish and still keep the cost to a minimum, then this is a method you should take a look at!
This method involves taking a coat hanger that you should have in your closet already and attaching it to the drone in order to carry your line to release your bait.
If you haven’t yet made the coat hanger bait release system, here is a video of a fellow angler making the system in a few easy steps:
Step 1: When you are ready to start fishing, all you need to do is to loop the fishing line around the coat hanger!
Step 2: The drone will then take off while pulling the line out to the desired location.
Step 3: When you have reached the area where you want to release the line from the drone, all you have to do is turn the drone around.
Step 4: Turning the drone around will cause the loop made with the fishing line to slip off the coat hanger.
Step 5: When the loop slips off the coat hanger, the fishing line will fall into the water.
Step 6: Now you can either hover over your bait and watch your catch or return the drone to your location.
As with most things in life, practice makes perfect! My recommendation is to try out all the methods, if you can, to decide which one works best for you. Alternatively, after watching the videos above it should give you a pretty good idea of how each method is done so you can make your decision.
